What is AWS Class ER317L MIG and TIG Filler Metal ?

AWS Class ER317L MIG and TIG filler welding wire and rod used in welding of austenitic stainless steels that need corrosion resistance in the chemical and marine application. They are chemically usually composed of 18-20% chromium, 11-13% nickel, 2-3% molybdenum and low carbon (<0.03), in order to reduce carbide content. ER317L has a tensile strength of 550 700MPa, yield strength of approximately 210Mpa, and an elongation of 4045 percent, which is highly ductile and tough. These wires and rods have high weldability, pitting and crevice corrosion resistance, strength and resistance to corrosion in high temperatures, which make them useful in severe stainless steel work.

AWS Class ER317L MIG and TIG filler welding wire and rod is common in welding austenitic stainless steel in application where high corrosion resistance is needed. They are also suitable in chemical processing equipment, pressure vessels, petrochemical plants and marine as they have a high resistance against pitting and crevice corrosion. They are used commonly in the formation of tanks, piping systems, heat exchangers, and structural components that are characterized by long-lasting high-quality welds. They have low carbon content and are therefore less sensitized hence can be used to weld stainless steels that will undergo post-weld annealing or service at high temperatures. ER317L offers consistency both in MIG welding and TIG welding.
