What is AWS Class ER 5183?
AWS Class ER 5183 is an aluminum-magnesium alloy welding filler metal, primarily composed of 4–5% magnesium, with trace amounts of manganese, chromium, and silicon. It offers excellent corrosion resistance, particularly in marine and saltwater environments, and maintains good weldability with minimal porosity. Mechanically, ER 5183 provides a tensile strength of approximately 290–350 MPa and a yield strength of 140–200 MPa, with elongation around 10–25%. Its high ductility, toughness, and resistance to cracking make it ideal for welding 5XXX series aluminum alloys, including ships, tanks, and structural components.
